Ladies & Bitches!
Who do you want to work with? Many of my client’s are just trying to get a sale from anyone that comes along. When I ask them who they want to work with, often times they are stumped. Knowing who you want to work with is SO important because it helps create a strong and creative Unique Selling Proposition, Brand Persona and compelling product or service. I also believe you will be happier when you know who you want to work with because you will attract people who value what you value, you will gain focus and more money HONEYYYY (depending on your goals.) Another issue I often see my clients have is cutting down their prices to get the customer who won’t appreciate or respect their craft…
There are two things I want you to think about when you are thinking about the people you want to work with; your values and money.
1. What do you value?!
I know I want to work with people that are in some way working to make the world a better place…whether that is in the form of a cosmetic line that makes women feel more confident or a jewellery brand that gives small loans to women in Uganda to create their own jewelry business. I’ve said before that I love working with people who give a shit. In the past, I have had to turn down jobs because they did not align with my values. Are you doing work that aligns with your values? Are you being treated the right way by your clients or are they dragging you around and wearing you out? You don’t have to be treated badly by assholes. Ever.
2. Money, Bitch!
I have turned down jobs when a client asks for something really quick or cheap without any sort of strategy behind it. The truth is that if I do a quick, cheap design no one is benefitting, not even the client. Typically the brand strategy portion of a project can take up to 40 + hours and that is without the design! I cheat people out of an amazing and PROFITABLE product when I try to make my work cheap and quick. The catch with having higher prices is that you must be perceived as valuable. If you have a shitty brand experience, you shouldn’t make your prices high because “you deserve it.” Have a valuable brand experience and be perceived this way, then get yo money.
When you work with people that you want to work with, you create valuable connections and you get paid what you are worth. You aren’t slaving away on your business, dealing with taxes, staying late and replying to endless emails to make less money. So, how can you attract the people who will pay you what you are worth? How can you attract the customers and clients who resonate with your brand?!
Create a Brand Persona
To solve your problem with attracting the wrong person, I recommend creating a brand persona. The brand persona was created by Alan Cooper and is defined as “a fictional character created to represent a user type that might use a site, brand, or product in a similar way.” A brand persona is a deep analysis of your ideal client or customer. This includes every detail about their life, start with a TON of research to start understanding your persona. Email me if you need some guidance on this!
It is always a beautiful thing when you get the right clients through your brand strategy, and it is even more beautiful when you are valued for your expertise. Know what you value and get that cash, girl
